Best practices are never a replacement for good solid planning. Instead, best practices can help inform your planning process so that you know where to start your planning, and as a reality check to make sure your planning hasn't overlooked something.
Based on my experiences in developing taxonomy plans for numerous corporations, organizations and government agencies, I've developed the following list of taxonomy best practices. Although these principles apply to SharePoint taxonomies, they are "technology agnostic" and applicable to any document classification system.
